Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
2018
Each class participates in a range of fitness activities during the week. These may include skipping, Zumba, distance run, dancing, relays or movement games.
Whole school sports sessions are held every Friday for students from K-2 and students in Years 3-6 who are not participating in PSSA sport. Years 2-6 and Kinder and Year 1 work in combined groups and take part in games and fundamental movement activities.
Term One
Students from Years 3-6 compete in Primary School Sports Association competitions (PSSA) or take part in school sport activities. In season one Tower Street PS competes in touch football (boys) or netball (girls).
The school swimming carnival is held in early Term One with all classes from Year 3-6 participating, whether in novelty events in the shalllowest pool or in competitive races in the 50 metre pool. Outstanding swimmers can go onto the district and then to area carnivals. By the end of the term students are busy practising for the annual cross-country carnival.
In Term One Tower Street also takes part in the School Swimming and Water Safety Program. Students from Year 2 and up are eligible for this program. Our school is fortunate enough to be in easy walking distance of Revesby Swimming Pool, which makes water activities cheap and convenient.
Term Two
In Term Two the school cross country carnival is held in our spacious grounds.
Season one of PSSA finishes and season two begins. In season two Tower Street PS competes in soccer (both girls and boys).
Term Three
Term Three brings the athletics carnival so the students practise high jump, long jump, discus and shotput during sports sessions.
Season two of PSSA finishes and the final season begins. Tower Street will be doing touch football and AFL.
Term Four
Season three of PSSA continues for most of this term.
We have physical activity programs for children from Kindergarten to Year 6, with a focus on fundamental movement skills.
Sport and physical activity is a valued and accepted part of our school's curriculum, contributing to the development of the whole child. It provides a vehicle for social, physical, emotional and moral learning and is an important expression of our culture.
The participation, enjoyment and skill development of our students is the corner-stone of the school sport/ physical activity program. All our students take part in this program.
There are also opportunities to represent our school at inter-school sports competitions. As a NSW public school we benefit from the opportunities for shared activities and competitions with other schools, coordinated by school sport associations. See the School Sport Unit website for details.
